How to Find Your Interior Design Style

Be intentional in creating a space that really, really nurtures and serves you.

Stop pinning and scrolling and dreaming — take action!

Here are the best tips in creating a space that serves and represents you.

In a recent episode of Self-Care Sunday, Kayley interviewed Jessica Velazquez, an interior designer with a real estate background. Jessica prefers the title of First-home Design Specialist because more than design and decorate, she coaches first-time homeowners to get rid of the limiting beliefs killing their home dreams. Here are some of Jessica’s tips on how to create a space that both serves and represents you!

1. Think about mood rather than style

What might be “modern” to somebody might be “contemporary” to somebody else. There are so many different ways to describe the way a room looks because it’s objective. Because of this, labels for styles get confusing. When Jessica talks to her clients she tells them: describe to me the mood and emotions.

How do you want this room to feel? When you walk in, to say a bedroom, for example, do you want it to feel serene? Do you want it to feel fun? Do you want it to feel like a luxurious hotel? Bottom line? Talk about your emotions when you want to talk about your style.

As you start to describe these photos to yourself, that’s when you will start discovering what you like and your interior design style. Once you have a collection, take a step back and look at your board. Is there a common denominator? A similar theme? As you do this, there will be a lot of self-awareness in figuring out your style and what you like.

2. Open a Pinterest board

When you pin, pin with purpose. While you’re pinning something, be intentional by putting a motive behind it. Why do you like this image? What does it serve? Describe it in the comments with a personal note as to why it’s there. You have to be able to identify why you love the image and what the colors or objects in the photo make you feel.

3. Look at the bigger picture

One of the hardest things to do when figuring out your design style is creating the vision. Jessica’s best advice? Create that vision of the end result. Before you start buying things one by one, plan out what the space is going to look like and only start purchasing when you have a really good idea of how all the elements will come together.

Otherwise, you end up purchasing both a couch and wall color you love — but they don’t match. Take a step back, create your vision and moodboards, and figure out the overall vibe before you go to check out.

Hopefully these tips help guide you into creating the self-care space of your dreams! If you want to hear more about Jessica’s background in real estate and interior design and her overall decorating tips, you can listen to her Self-Care Sunday episode here.
